HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – During the Aug. 15 Christian County School Board meeting, Kevin Hitchel with the Alliance Corporation gave an update on construction of the new Christian County High School, while also addressing recent rumors implying that a structure was damaged by quarry blasts.

“Things are going very well,” Hitchel said at the beginning of his presentation. He walked the board through photos of the construction site, showing recent brick placement and overall progress.

Larger areas have started to see metal framing, and sidewalks are in beginning stages. He believes they will have the building roofed by the end of the year, also explaining that electrical components are still hard to get firm timelines on because of ongoing COVID-19 delays.

Brick feature walls and the cafeteria atrium are coming together, and they are block filling classrooms with a plan of fully developing a few rooms to use as models for the rest of the school.

Stable concrete structure

Hitchel showed several photos of the auxiliary gym, which was built with 12-inch concrete walls that can withstand up to 200 mph winds. He addressed a recent post circulating on Facebook that implied this structure was unstable due to blasts from the local quarry. “Obviously whoever wrote that knows nothing about construction,” Hitchel told the board.

He further explained that the structure in question is currently being braced while it sets, adding that the building could double as a storm shelter and would not be affected by blasts.

According to Hitchel, every structural joist has been tested and checked, with the onsite construction team acting as the frontline for quality control day to day, and their work is thoroughly looked over by inspectors.
