HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Christian County Fiscal Court applied for additional grant money to continue repairing Coal Creek Road, and discussed donation needs for Hurricane Helene victims.

Although the Christian County Airport has received an outpouring of donations for hurricane victims in North Carolina and East Tennessee with Operation Airdrop, continued monetary donations would allow pilots to cover fuel costs and continue their efforts.

Magistrate John Bruce explained during the meeting that the airport has been able to move about 4,000 pounds of supplies since their operation began. However, each trip costs about $500 in fuel. He added that they have received several private donations, but even small monetary amounts from the community can make an impact.

Accepted items include sports drinks, hydration packs, diapers, baby wipes, baby formula, bug spray, non-perishable foods, and cleaning supplies. Donations can be dropped off at 300 Memorial Field Drive Monday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m. For more a full list of requested items, visit the Christian County Airport Facebook page.

County road repair grant

Funding for road repairs through the County Priority Project Program grant was applied for several years ago by the Christian County Fiscal Court and was recently approved by the general assembly. Through this grant, repairs on Coal Creek Road in northern Christian County have begun.

“It’s in the worst shape of our county roads. In fact, they are paving the first half from this program today,” said Judge Executive Jerry Gilliam during the meeting.

Gilliam specified that it is the longest road in the county road system and has not been in good shape in quite some time. At the Oct. 8 meeting, the fiscal court signed an application for the next grant cycle, which would allow repairs for the second half of Coal Creek Road.

The money would also cover repairs for a smaller county road that has sustained damage and cracking from significant horse and buggy traffic. The estimated cost of both projects is $685,000.
