HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has dispatched snow and ice crews in response to the National Weather Service predicating the possibility of a winter storm hitting western Kentucky this weekend.

Pretreating of over 5,000 miles of roads with a salt brine mixture began on Jan. 1 and will last through Jan. 2. In a news release, KYTC urges motorists to use caution when snow and ice crews are present as these vehicles will be moving slowly during the application process.

KYTC District 2 covers 11 counties in the state, including 840 miles of roads in Christian County, several within Hopkinsville city limits such as the Pennyrile Parkway and interstate. Preparation for winter events began back in November. They have designated 2,500 tons of salt, 16,000 gallons of magnesium, and 35,000 gallons of salt brine to help prevent the dangerous freezing of roads.

The forecast is currently predicting a 90% chance of rain and possible freezing rain throughout Sunday, with snow possible on Monday.
