HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Another freezing night is on the way as the Cold Weather Advisory has been extended until 7 a.m. on Wednesday for Christian County.
The National Weather Service in Paducah initially issued the advisory through 3 p.m. on Tuesday, another advisory is in place starting at 9 p.m. tonight. The high for Tuesday is only 19 degrees, dropping down to single digits overnight with wind chill values as low as -2.
“Extreme cold like we’re currently facing is concerning for us and we typically see an uptick of house fires caused by space heaters,” said Payton Rogers with the Hopkinsville Fire Department.
If using a portable heater inside a residence, they should be used as instructed to prevent hazardous conditions that could lead to a fire. Generators and grills should not be used indoors.
He recommends that people plug heaters directly into a dedicated wall outlet, not an extension cord. They should also be kept at least three feet away from combustibles like curtains or furniture and not be left unattended. “It’s tempting to keep them on at night, but we advise against that,” added Rogers.
