State of Emergency declared as Christian County braces for heavy rainfall and potential flooding

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has declared a state of emergency, as a flood watch is in effect for early Saturday, Feb. 15, through Sunday, Feb. 16.

HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has declared a state of emergency, as a flood watch is in effect for early Saturday, Feb. 15, through Sunday, Feb. 16. Another 2 to 5 inches of rainfall is expected, and combined with previous rainfall over the past several days, will likely result in flooding.

According to the National Weather Service, significant flooding is possible including widespread areal, river and isolated flash flooding. Significant flooding is expected when the heaviest rain falls on Saturday.

“We want everyone to be careful,” said Gov. Beshear. “The amount of rain coming down will make it hard to drive, and flash flooding, especially across our roads, can create dangerous conditions. And remember, don’t drive through standing water, it can have a current, and it is incredibly dangerous.”

Kentucky Emergency Operations Center and units of Kentucky National Guard are standing by ready to respond. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials and crews are also on alert, and local emergency management leaders are working to keep Kentuckians everywhere informed.

Here’s the day-by-day outlook.

Friday: Increasing clouds, with a high near 44. East southeast wind 5 to 8 mph.
Friday night: Showers after midnight. Low around 37. South wind 6 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.
Saturday: Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 59. South wind 8 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.
Saturday night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 30. South southwest wind 8 to 13 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.
Sunday: A slight chance of rain and snow showers before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 36. Northwest wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Sunday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 15. North northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.
