HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – With a Cold Weather Advisory in place for Christian County by the National Weather Service, and overnight temperatures dropping to the single digits, the community is being asked to do their part in conserving power through Friday.

On. Jan 22, the Tennessee Valley Authority set an all-time record for electricity usage in the region when a cold snap and freeze came through the area. Power outages were prevented due to preparation and energy conservation that avoided overloading the power grid.

Local energy supplier Hopkinsville Electric System, who purchases their power from the TVA, is encouraging residents to once again prioritize conservation despite extremely low temperatures. In a statement, HES/energynet said they have been asked to reduce electrical use as much as possible on Feb. 20 and Feb. 21 between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Conservation will allow them to extend the available power supply to the city. They suggest small adjustments like lowering the thermostat by a couple of degrees, delaying the use of large appliances until later in the day, and turning off any electrical devices that are not being used.
