HOPKINSVILLE, KY — The Christian County Master Gardener Association is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year by recognizing its longtime members and preparing for its annual Garden Expo.
At the March meeting, President Mattea Wyatt presented seven Master Gardeners with 20-year service award pins. Those members include George Byars, Sarah Byars, Dawn Francis, Barbara Gossett, Lynda Lee, Connie McGahee and Jesse McGuire. Additional recognition was given to five-year, 10-year and 15-year members. They will also receive a special anniversary pin.
Master Gardeners receive initial training by completing a 13-week course and passing an exam. Members are required to log 40 hours of annual community service and continued education to maintain Master Gardener status. According to Christian County Horticulture Agent Kelly Jackson, who oversees the association, there are currently 70 Christian County Master Gardeners, with 58 members reporting community service last year.
“We have several lifetime members who aren’t required to report annual hours but still do a ton of service in the community,” he said at the meeting. In the past year alone, the association logged over 3,000 service hours in the community.
Master Gardeners history
Founded in 2005, the Christian County Master Gardeners have dedicated themselves to sharing knowledge and fostering a love for gardening within the community. From organizing workshops to spearheading community beautification projects, the association has inspired countless residents to cultivate their green thumbs and embrace sustainable gardening practices.
Throughout the year, the association hosts free community education events, such as garden tours and workshops as advertised and promoted on the Facebook page and Hello Garden newsletter.
In honor of their long-standing commitment to horticulture and education, the association acknowledged members who have played a significant role in its success over the past two decades. Their dedication and passion have not only enriched the association but have also strengthened the gardening community throughout Christian County.
“This year marks a significant turning point for our association, and we are proud to celebrate the dedication of all our members,” said Wyatt, who graduated from the 2023 class. “Their hard work and commitment to the community exemplify the spirit of our organization. We look forward to recognizing their contributions and continuing our mission in the years ahead.”
