CHRISTIAN COUNTY, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A half a million-dollar renovation to Gordon Park in Crofton concluded just in time for summer, with a newly installed playground transforming the already beautiful outdoor space. The funding for this project was facilitated by State Representative Jason Petrie, which permitted necessary upgrades and paved the way for a whole new look for the beloved community gathering place.

“It’s really been a blessing what he’s (Petrie’s) done for the community,” said Crofton Mayor Danny Lacy. “I don’t think you’ll find a better park in Christian County at this time.” Lacy shared that in addition to the installation of new playground equipment, new fencing was placed at the baseball field and at the splash pad, and the bathrooms were renovated. The building at Gordon Park was also upgraded with a new kitchen, and LED lighting is set to be installed along the walking path outside.

Located on North Old Madisonville Road in Crofton, Gordon Park has always drawn visitors due to features like their large pond with a paved walking trail, a baseball field, splash pad, little free library, and several covered pavilions for patrons and families.

As a result of the renovation, it is now home to two separate playground areas. The new area has a small play structure for younger kids, and a much larger play structure for more adventurous visitors alongside a swing set. Kids can have fun checking out the multiple slides winding around the structure, with several ways to climb and explore.

Funding and community impact

Despite the scale of this project, the city and county did spend any money out of pocket to cover the cost of the renovations, with Petrie allocating $500,000 for this project. Petrie issued the following statement about his involvement to Christian County Now.

“We’ve worked hard to maintain a fiscally responsible budget that empowers us to make meaningful investments like this in our local communities. I appreciate the working relationship I have with local officials and their work to update this area. Gordon Park is a true treasure for Christian County. It is a safe spot for children to play, a welcoming venue for church and group events, or a central hub for the community, this park enhances the quality of life for everyone who visits. This funding will help ensure Gordon Park continues to serve as a vibrant, well-equipped destination for generations to come.”

The beloved park is a Crofton staple that has always previously relied on fundraising for upkeep. It was dedicated to the memory of Ben and Tillie Gordon who lived in Crofton between 1912 and 1960. The park is nearly 30 years old and requires regular maintenance during the season to maintain the flowers, paint, and equipment.

Since the park acts like a hub for northern Christian County residents, Lacy believes these renovations are an investment into the community. They often host birthday parties, community gatherings, and family reunions due to its location and amenities. During the summer, Gordon Park is also home to legendary Fish Fry events, which has already attracted hundreds to the park to grab a plate of home fried food.
