HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Christian County Public Schools’ Board of Education approved the purchase of a new special needs bus and multiple construction change orders for the new Christian County High School.

During the Dec. 18 meeting, Director of Transportation Mike Brumley presented the board with an opportunity to purchase a new special needs bus at a discounted price. Brumley said the bus was originally ordered by another district that later decided not to move forward with the purchase.

As a result, the manufacturer offered the bus to Christian County at a reduced cost, saving the district $10,785 off the original purchase price. He said the district would also avoid the longer wait time typically associated with ordering a new bus. The bus can be delivered by the second week of January. Brumley noted that the district currently operates 10 special needs buses on a daily basis. The board approved the bus purchase unanimously.

Brumley also said that the CCPS electric buses this year are “doing much better than last.” He added that four buses drove daily routes while the other two focused on gateways.

“We’re getting anywhere from 80 to 100 miles per charge,” he said, while highlighting the weather and terrain as mileage factors. Despite the limitations, Brumley said he is overall pleased with the reliability so far.

The board also approved nine construction change orders for the new Christian County High School totaling approximately $94,000. Several of the change orders involved repurposing classrooms, including removal of power poles and the installation of power reels. Other approved changes included a labor deduction related to the installation of operable partitions, the addition of decorative concrete and the elimination of concrete pavers.

The board approved $87,000 in career and technical education (CTE) flooring upgrades, as well as additional flooring changes in an engineering classroom. A credit of $78,000 was also approved as part of the change order package.

Additional items included the installation of missing door hardware, drywall installation over masonry at the gym’s main entrance to create a smooth surface for graphics in the “Hall of Champions”, costing $26,000, as well as repairs related to unsuitable soil and a sinkhole totaling $15,883. All nine change orders were approved by the board.
