HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Hopkinsville celebrated Juneteenth this year by bringing the community together for an evening of live music, food and togetherness.

Jazzing for Juneteenth was hosted at the Hopkinsville Visitors Center and was the first event of its kind after several iterations of different celebrations in the city over the years. Families joined together on June 20 with lawn chairs to enjoy music from a live DJ, and a performance by Tina Brown.

Food trucks were also set up along with several vendors and a kids area and a craft station to make for a special summer night in Hoptown.

Juneteenth celebrates the official end of slavery after troops arrived in a Texas city in 1865 to ensure all slaves were free two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. In honor of this, June 19 is an executive branch holiday in Kentucky.
