HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A police pursuit in Hopkinsville Tuesday afternoon resulted in the arrest of a 55-year-old Hopkinsville woman.

Officers with the Hopkinsville Police Department initially responded to a shoplifter at the Walmart on Clinic Drive just before 1 p.m. Asset protection employees at the store advised that a woman had stolen items and started running when she was confronted. Police were given a description of the suspect and her vehicle, and she was located on McLean Avenue.

Lights and sirens were activated to initiate a traffic stop, but the woman failed to pull over and began driving erratically across the roadway at approximately 40 mph, according to an arrest report. The pursuit continued in the area of East Seventh Street, with the suspect gradually speeding up and driving through three stop signs.

The woman, identified by police as 55-year-old Debbie Elliot of Hopkinsville, was successfully pulled over and in the area of Mechanic Street around ten minutes later. When she was in the process of being detained, police say she failed to put her vehicle in park, and it crashed into and HPD vehicle.

Elliot confessed to officers that she had put multiple items from Walmart into her purse and did not pay for them. She was arrested and charged with driving without a license, criminal mischief, fleeing or evading police and other traffic violations.
