HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A wreck that occurred in Hopkinsville last Friday has resulted in charges for a Hopkinsville man who was found to be under the influence of alcohol before a wrong way crash.
On Aug. 7 around 5 p.m., officers with the Hopkinsville Police Department were dispatched to the bridge on North Drive in reference to a head on collision. Four vehicles were involved in the accident, with the drunk driver first swerving into another vehicle down the opposing lane of traffic before colliding head on with the second vehicle, and that car was pushed back into a third vehicle.
HPD made contact with the driver, a Hopkinsville man, and reported that they detected the odor of alcohol on his person. A field sobriety test was not performed due to the severity of the collision and his need for a medical evaluation. The driver was transported to Jenn Stuart Medical Center for treatment. Drivers from two other vehicles were also treated for injuries.
While investigating the scene, officers found an open container of whiskey on the floorboards of his vehicle, according to a police report. He admitted to officers that he had taken prescribed medication and drank prior to the collision before blacking out.
Because of his injuries, the driver was cited and released. He is being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and possession of an open alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.
