FORT CAMPBELL, KY – Fort Campbell will conduct a windshield tint enforcement blitz Sept. 28 – Oct. 2 at all entry points to the installation. Enforcement will continue after the blitz across the installation.
“The upcoming tint blitz is fundamentally about the safety and security of our installation,” said James Brown, Chief of Physical Security. “Our gate guards must be able to clearly identify vehicle occupants to ensure only authorized personnel gain access. Vehicles with excessively dark tint compromise that capability and put our community at risk.”
According to the United States Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration windshields may be tinted “as long as the light transmission is not restricted to less than 70 percent of normal.” Tint should also not exceed the AS1 line on a windshield, typically about 4 – 6 inches from the top of the windshield.
Drivers on Fort Campbell whose windshields are found to be in violation face a citation with a mandatory court appearance, immediate tow of their vehicle, and suspension of driving privileges on Fort Campbell for 12 months or until the tint is removed. Drivers are responsible for any fees related to the towing and storage of their vehicles.
“For safety reasons, all over windshield tint is not authorized nationwide,” explained Lt. Nicholas Pietila, Traffic Supervisor. “This is not something a doctor’s note will cover. If you claim to have a medical waiver, we will investigate and you could be charged accordingly if fraud is determined. Buying a vehicle with tint that doesn’t meet the standard is also not an excuse.”
