CHRISTIAN COUNTY, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Christian County Sheriff’s Office, along with Kentucky State Police Post 2, are launching called High Five. This is a rural traffic safety project funded through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that will focus on reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities by introducing awareness and education for seat belt usage.

Based on the information obtained from the High Five project, Christian County ranks eleventh out of 120 counties in Kentucky for traffic fatalities.

“I think some people still choose not to wear the seatbelt because of lack of awareness and the belief that they are driving safely,” said Christian County Sheriff’s Office Administrative Lt. James Dragoo. “They think they will never be in a crash, but they have to understand it’s not just them on the roadway.”

Through education and enforcement, CCSO’s goal is to emphasize that the easiest way to prevent traffic fatalities and injuries is simply to buckle up and exercise careful driving habits since the chances of surviving a traffic crash are 45% higher when properly restrained in a seat belt.

This project will combine community outreach, education, awareness, and enforcement, according to a news release from CCSO. The goal for this project is to inform the community on how seat belt usage and safer driving habits can reduce the chances of injuries, fatalities, and overall accidents in Christian County and surrounding communities.

The High Five Project will run through Sept. 30, 2027.
