HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A High Wind Warning has been issued for Christian and surrounding counties until midnight tonight.

Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines with power outages expected, according to the National Weather Service.

“The chance for gusts up to 50 mph is high, and there is potential for gusts up to 60 mph or greater,” said the NWS. “The effective impact of these high wind gusts cannot be overstated, especially as they occur over saturated ground where trees will be more easily uprooted.”

The NWS advises that people should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. If you must drive, use caution.

Here’s the day-by-day outlook.

  • Today: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 4pm, then rain after 4pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 55. Windy, with a south southeast wind 21 to 26 mph becoming southwest 28 to 33 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 60 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.
  • Tonight: Rain and snow, possibly mixed with sleet before 7pm. Low around 22. Windy, with a west southwest wind 25 to 30 mph decreasing to 17 to 22 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Little or no snow and sleet accumulation expected.
  • Saturday: A 20 percent chance of snow after 4pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 37. West southwest wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.
  • Saturday night: A slight chance of snow before 7pm, then a slight chance of snow after 1am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 12. West wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
  • Sunday: A 20 percent chance of snow before 7am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 22. West northwest wind 8 to 10 mph.
  • Sunday night: Snow likely, mainly after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 11. North wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
