HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The third annual Howl-O-Weenie Adoption event at the Christian County Animal Shelter was held this past Saturday. Offering discounted microchips for dogs and cats, nail trimming, face painting, raffles and a wide variety of venders plus lowered adoption fees, the event is one of the two largest fundraising events the shelter has.
The event was busy all through the day, with face and pumpkin painting for everyone and a bounce castle for the kids. Pets sported new neckerchiefs and leashes and interacted with Garfield as he wandered through the booths. 20 pets were adopted into new forever homes by the end of the event and $391 was raised for the Get Em’ Done program.
According to Animal Shelter director Melissa Goff the shelter typically adopts out twice as many animals as a normal Saturday during this event. The fees the vendors pay, and all the proceeds of the event go toward the Get Em’ Done program, which allows the shelter to spay and neuter stray animals to control the population.
Along with vendors like Keisha’s Wings and Soul Food, Starbird Gourmet Popcorn and Star-gazer Woodcraft, several other animal rescue services were also onsite to promote the animals they are caring for. Max’s Hope, a no-kill shelter, brought along several cats and dogs looking for their forever homes. Haven 12:10 Animal Sanctuary for dogs, cats and horses was handing out bracelets and ways to donate through the help of Kroger. The Christian County Humane Society said they are seeing more dogs being surrendered this year and the center is getting full.
Monica Mayo, with Moving Mountains for Mastiffs Rescue, has been a participant in the event since it began. She feels it’s important to come out to support other rescue facilities when she can. “No one person is going to solve rescue. It’s going to take everybody.”
The shelter is open Tuesday through Saturdays if you missed the event and they showcase their current animals on their Facebook page. Donations are always welcome.
