CHRISTIAN COUNTY, KY – By the end of summer, motorists along I-24 westbound in southern Christian County can expect a smoother welcome to Kentucky, as the Roger’s Group, a contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, is scheduled to begin a five-month project that will literally rebuild right at five miles of interstate highway.
This $25 million project, set to get underway today, will see both westbound lanes from the 93 to the 88 mile points removed and rebuilt from the road base up. This section of roadway is currently concrete but will be replaced by new asphalt pavement.
In addition to new base and surface pavement of the roadway, this project will also include resurfacing of the westbound I-24 bridge over West Fork Red River (91.4 mp).
Traffic flow expectations
Crews are expected to begin placing traffic control signage and barriers today, Sunday, March 1, 2026. Motorists on the westbound side should expect lane restrictions to begin at or near the Tennessee state line, while motorists heading east should watch for lane restrictions to begin near the exit to KY 115 at Oak Grove.
Both westbound lanes of I-24 will be blocked just west of the Oak Grove Welcome Center, with east and westbound traffic both utilizing one lane on the eastbound side of the interstate. Temporary barrier walls will be in place to keep traffic separated. The Welcome Center and Rest Area will remain open during this project.
Due to the lane configuration, the maximum allowable load width will be 14 feet. Over-dimensional vehicles exceeding this width restriction must use an alternate route.
Westbound over-dimensional traffic is advised to detour via I-65 to I-165 to the Western Kentucky Parkway to I-69 to I-24, provided no restrictions are in place on those routes. Eastbound over-dimensional traffic should take I-169 to the Western Kentucky Parkway to I-165 to I-65.
The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-August.
