HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A woman was charged with abandoning a minor after her young child was found alone in the parking lot of their apartment complex.

On Dec. 29 around 5:20, officers with the Hopkinsville Police Department were dispatched to the apartments on Moores Court after a concerned citizen reported finding a six-year-old boy wandering in the parking lot in 26-degree temperatures without weather appropriate clothing. She said the boy approached her vehicle and asked for a ride to his grandmother’s house, according to HPD. She was able to keep the child warm in her vehicle until officers arrived.

An investigation revealed that the child resides with his mother at the apartments, and that he is often left alone for long stretches of time at night. The child was eventually released to his grandmother after the involvement of DCBS.

Multiple attempts were made to contact his mother, identified as 24-year-old Aniyah Lewis, but she failed to respond. Around 8 p.m. that same evening, Lewis arrived at the police station and was taken into custody. She is currently being charged with abandonment of a minor.
