HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – As summer rapidly approaches the Pennyroyal Arts Council has announced creatively fueled camps they will be hosting at the Alhambra Theater for local students.

According to a news release, the 2026 season will feature three different programs including a patriotic visual arts journey, an exclusive mural-painting intensive, and a professional theatrical production. All of these are aimed for school aged youth started with first grade.

  • smARTS Visual Arts Camp: “America at 250”: June 1–5, 2026. Led by resident artist Paula Gieseke, this camp celebrates the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. Students will explore the visionaries of American art, from the bold Pop Art of Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring to the expressive realism of Georgia O’Keeffe.
  • Mural Art Camp: “Soul Food”: June 22–26. In this exclusive intensive limited to just 10 spots, students in grades 5–12 will work with instructor Mackenzie Russell. Inspired by the cubist style of Picasso’s Three Musicians, campers will use professional tools to create a mural celebrating the intersection of the community’s agricultural roots and cultural history.
  • Missoula Children’s Theatre-Peter and Wendy: July 20–25 The Missoula Children’s Theatre is coming to the Alhambra Theatre, and they are looking for local stars to fill approximately 50–60 roles in the production of Peter and Wendy. This program provides a unique opportunity for local students to experience a full-scale theatrical production from audition to curtain call in just six days.

“Our summer camps are designed to give local youth a professional and immersive experience in the arts,” said Kelly Selfe, Education Coordinator for the Pennyroyal Arts Council. “Whether they are learning the techniques of American masters or stepping into the spotlight with a national touring company, there is a place for every young artist here.”

A full list of details and pricing about the camps can be found on the Pennyroyal Arts website.

Space is limited for all sessions, especially the Mural Art Camp. Early registration is highly encouraged to ensure a spot in these popular summer traditions. To register or for more information, Contact Kelly Selfe at kelly.selfe@pennyroyalarts.org, or call (270) 887-4295 ext. 104.
