Updated 11:15 a.m.: Hopkinsville Middle School was briefly placed on high alert after a student received a suspicious phone call this morning, according to Hopkinsville Police Department.
All staff and students are safe, and the school is no longer on high alert as of 10 a.m. Detectives with HPD are currently investigating the phone incident.
Updated 9:30 a.m.: The lockdown of Hopkinsville High School and surrounding schools has been lifted, and no active threat was found by Hopkinsville Police. Schools in the area have resumed their normal schedules for the day.
The threat came from a voicemail left on a school district line Monday afternoon, according to HPD. The message was not discovered until Tuesday morning, which initiated the lockdown.
“Hopkinsville High and Indian Hills Elementary were put on high alert this morning while a voicemail left at the school was investigated. Hopkinsville Police Department responded and thoroughly investigated the threat and did not find the threat to be credible,” said a statement from Christian County Public Schools.
Authorities conducted a primary and secondary sweep of HHS and did not find anything substantial backing up the threat. HPD suspects this was a “swatting” call, which is a call from a source outside the area that often target multiple schools with a generic threat.
