HOPKINSVILLE, KY – Motorists traveling through the I-24 construction corridor in Christian County will see an additional layer of speed enforcement beginning Wednesday, when the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet deploys the first Camera-Assisted Speed Enforcement (CASE) unit in KYTC District 2.
The CASE system allows KYTC to work with the Kentucky State Police to conduct automated speed enforcement in active highway work zones. The system was authorized by House Bill 664, known as the Jared Lee Helton Act, which was signed into law on April 4, 2025. The law allows law enforcement officers to issue citations based on information from automated speed enforcement devices when a vehicle is detected traveling more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit in a highway work zone and required safety personnel and vehicles are present.
Automated speed enforcement devices have been deployed in work zones across Kentucky as the equipment has become available. The I-24 construction corridor in Christian County will be the first location in District 2 to receive a CASE unit. It is one of five KYTC projects to be assigned a CASE unit.
Signage notifying motorists of the automated speed enforcement has been in place for approximately a week. KSP plans to begin using the device for enforcement at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23.
The CASE unit is installed within the portion of the I-24 work zone where the posted speed limit is 55 mph. This is between the 85.5 and 89 mile points.
Motorists are reminded to obey the posted speed limit, remain alert and use caution when traveling through the construction zone. Speeding not only puts motorists at risk, but also creates additional hazards for the workers who are working alongside the interstate.
