HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – For a third year, Christian County Public Schools held their annual Career Expo at The Bruce in Hopkinsville. This massive event spread throughout the convention center, with the goal of introducing high school freshmen to a variety of local trades and career paths.

Divided into zones, students from Christian County and Hopkinsville High School were able to engage in hands on demonstrations to learn more about a variety of jobs ranging from the arts, agriculture, technology paths and trades. Each zone grouped businesses together that would fit into a specific academy model at school.

“I’m hoping it sparks interest,” said John Barks with the Hopkinsville Water Environmental Authority booth. “I have a teenage son, he’s always curious and wanting to work with his hands, so just to see the interest that the kids are showing means a lot at the end of the day.”

HWEA had their equipment and trucks parked inside, giving students the chance to see up close what employees do every day. They were able to communicate how the sewer and water systems works in the city, and the role HWEA plays in the community.

In a separate zone, deputies with the Christian County Sheriff’s Office were letting students try out “drunk goggles” that simulate the disorientation experienced when under the influence of alcohol. The demonstration was intended to be both entertaining and informative, allowing deputies to not only warn about the dangers of drinking and driving, but introduce students to a possible career in law enforcement.

“At this age they are still willing to be open to talking to us and see the different opportunities of what they want to do when they get older,” Deputy Sara Morris told Christian County Now at the expo.

Throughout the day, students were able to speak dozens of businesses and representatives, with support from volunteers with the Christian County Chamber of Commerce and CCPS staff.
