HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Christian County Public Schools held their first Local Planning Committee meeting of the year on Wednesday, Jan. 7.

CCPS teachers, principals, community members, and former school board members discussed the District Facility Plan and elected David Wimpy as their chairperson, and Mark McGee as vice-chairman.

Disability accommodations, parking issues, facility conditions discussed

During DFP discussions, Sinking Fork Elementary School Principal Lacy Ramirez brought up that over the years she has seen an increase in students with disabilities and schools need to accommodate for future needs.

“We need to look at our spaces and resource teachers in each building. Do we have the space allocated for them,” she said during the meeting. “Lots of times I am shuffling people outside of offices, sometimes my own, to allow for people to provide private spaces for kids with needs like physical therapy, counseling, occupational, speech. We are out of space when it comes to those types of services.”

Ramirez along with Indian Hills Elementary School Assistant Principal, Matthew Francies talked about their school’s parking situation. “Parking is a big issue for us especially when we have a family function. At our first open house lots of people contacted us complaining about it,” said Francies.

He also highlighted issues at Indian Hills like their leaking roof and outdated floors. “We counted the other day 122 ceiling tiles with wet stains,” added Francies.

Former school board member Tiffany Mumford Brame talked about making a larger performing arts center. “The current one serves its purpose, but it is crowded a lot. The stage we do have over there is not big enough for an actual full long theater performance,” said Brame.

Members will continue to discuss buildings and facilities at their next meeting on Feb. 4.
