HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Christian County Animal Shelter is asking anyone who has adopted within the last two weeks to watch their pet for respiratory symptoms as a dog in the shelter ended up having distemper.

Canine distemper is a highly contagious viral disease, and CCAS said to bring your pet to the veterinarian immediately if they show any signs of labored breathing, persistent coughing, wheezing, and excessive nasal discharge. Other symptoms include lack of energy, reduced appetite and vomiting.

In a Facebook post, CCAS announced they are closed until further notice for intake and adoptions as they are getting a quarantine area set up for incoming animals to have a safe space.

“We are dealing with this as quickly as possible so that we can resume operations,” CCAS said.

Currently, the shelter is having their Dog Days of Summer event, which will continue to run without adoptions as the vendors remain outside. They will also be contacting those who have adopted in the recent weeks.
