OAK GROVE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Interstate 24 will be reduced to one lane in both directions starting in March as a contractor working for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet initiates a repair project.
Initial work will impact a five-mile section of the east and westbound lanes of I-24 between the 88-mile marker and the Tennessee state line. Road work is anticipated to start on March 1 and is scheduled to be completed by mid-August.
Oak Grove Public Works Director Brian Ahart disclosed that this is a resurfacing project that has been planned for over a year. This is separate from the anticipated construction around Exit 89 in Oak Grove that will expand the bridge and construct several roundabouts to accommodate Buc-ee’s.
According to a news release from KYTC, during this phase of construction, traffic from both eastbound and westbound lanes will be shifted to the eastbound side of the interstate, with temporary barrier walls separating opposing traffic. Due to the lane configuration, the maximum allowable load width will be 14 feet. Over-dimensional vehicles exceeding this width restriction must use an alternate route.
KYTC advises that over-dimensional traffic detours via I-65 to I-165 to the Western Kentucky Parkway to I-69 to I-24, provided no restrictions are in place on those routes.
Motorists should expect reduced speeds and possible delays, and are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and use caution through the work zone.
