HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Inmates in the Substance Abuse Program (SAP) at the Christian County Jail created hand crafted ornaments that were delivered to a local assisted living facility ahead of Christmas.
“This initiative emphasizes the positive impact our inmate population can have when they become productive societal contributors, despite past mistakes,” said a statement from the Christian County Jail.

Jailer Adam Smith told Christian County Now that 70 individuals in SAP participated, working hard to create 75 folded ornaments of a variety of shapes and colors. This is the first time this particular project has been tackled, with all of the ornaments distributed by staff members to people living at Charter Senior Living in Hopkinsville before Christmas.
“I think doing service projects like this are important because it teaches inmates to think of others and to see what doing good does for others,” said Smith. “We constantly look for ways to help inmates become better versions of themselves. Sometimes that is through tough love, if you will, and other times it’s through projects like this.
Through additional community collaborations throughout the year, select inmates at the jail are given the opportunity through their workforce program, which allows them to engage with nonprofits and government agencies. Inmates were also critical during the 2025 spring flood, where they were able to provide cleanup assistance to places like Jeffers Bend Environmental Center.
