HOPKINSVILLE, KY – “Community” is the theme for the 2026 bell hooks Memorial Writing Contest, hosted by Christian County Literacy Council.

“Christian County Literacy Council commemorates bell hooks by using memorial contributions to remind us of themes she wrote about in her works,” said Francene Gilmer, director, CCLC. “The themes for previous years were ‘love,’ ‘belonging,’ ‘change,’ and ‘learning,’ and now, ‘community.’”

In the past, the contest has been limited to Kentucky residents, but this year anyone in the world can apply. Writers young and old are encouraged to submit their original work. Prizes will be awarded in the following age groups:

  • Ages 5-8
  • Ages 9-12
  • Ages 13-17
  • Adults ages 18 and older

“While bell hooks is a Kentuckian, her writings are loved and appreciated around the world,” Gilmer said. “I applaud this committee for recognizing her worldwide influence and extending the invitation for so many others to participate in this writing contest.”

Eligible types of work are as follows.

  • Poetry
  • Short Essay (500-700 words)
  • Long Essay (700-1,500 words)
  • Short Story (500-1,500 words)

The bell hooks Memorial Writing Contest was established by CCLC in 2021, following the death of bell hooks. Gloria Jean Watkins, pen name, bell hooks, is a famous author native to Hopkinsville, Kentucky, with about 40 published works, including children’s literature. bell hooks is an internationally acclaimed feminist and activist.
