“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines,” the NWS warning said. “Power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.”
The chance for gusts up to 50 mph is high, and the area could see gusts of 60 mph or greater. “The effective impact of these high wind gusts cannot be understated, especially as they occur over saturated grounds where trees will be more easily uprooted,” the NWS said.
During the wind storm, people are advised to avoid being outside in forested areas.
“If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.”
Schools closed
Friday will be a Non-Traditional Instruction Day, (NTI) meaning students will be expected to complete Day 1 of their NTI assignments. Teachers and staff will be available by email, classroom apps or texts for any parent or students needing assistance or support, the announcement said.
All extra-curricular activities, practices, and games are also canceled for Friday. There will be no childcare in the district. Inspire Early Learning Academy will also be closed. The announcement added a reminder that students and staff are also out Monday, Jan. 15 due to the MLK holiday.
“Stay safe and please be alert of any weather watches and warnings for our area,” the announcement said.
