HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A Christian County Special Olympics softball team won the Special Olympics Kentucky State Championship Softball Tournament in Owensboro. Over 40 teams competed from around the state during the tournament with over 1,000 players taking the field.
LuAnn Diuguid is the Christian County Special Olympics Coordinator and coach who helped lead the team to the trophy said the road to victory was rough, and the team was not ahead for the majority of the time, which made the win that much sweeter. The team victoriously rode back to Hopkinsville on Sunday with a police escort to celebrate their win and be greeted by family and friends.
“We had two games, and they were both just crazy games. We were so lucky to win,” Diuguid told Christian County Now. “We were behind, and we came back so I told them you can just never give up because you never know what’s ahead.”
Diuguid has been involved with the Christian County Special Olympics for about 20 years and uses her experience as a special education teacher to coach players of all skill levels. They travelled to compete Friday and Sunday, making sure they had time to drive back home in between to support one of their team members in the Dancing with Our Starts competition.
She added that all of the players were thrilled all weekend, and she is so thankful for their win. To learn more information or to volunteer, go to Christian County Special Olympics Facebook.
