HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Registration for the third annual Christian County Literacy Council Spelling Bee closes on Sept. 15. This yearly event is known to challenge local, young minds and promote literacy in the city.

On Sept. 26, dozens of children from all over Christian County will be ready to compete. This annual competition started back in 2021 with only 35 contestants. Last year, 83 kids between 3rd and 8th grade competed to win the title.

Beth Brockman, the chair of the event, is excited to see what this year will bring, “The Spelling Bee is a fun way to promote literacy in our community and bring awareness to the Literacy Council at the same time. We are excited this program has continued with enthusiasm and community support.”

There are high hopes for this event to keep growing and spreading literacy awareness through the county. The Director of the Literacy Council, Francene Gilmer, speaks about the power of the Spelling Bee, “The Literacy Council is proud to sponsor an event that highlights the educational skills and growth of our Christian County students. These students approach the microphone with a range of emotions from jitters to confidence. We consider each of them winners.”
