HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – On Thursday, Jan. 11, Hopkinsville Police arrested a convicted felon after finding a handgun hidden in the backseat of his vehicle.

According to reports, as the vehicle turned on Glass Avenue. It began to pick up speed and made a left turn onto Park Avenue without using a turn signal. The vehicle continued to slow roll after officers initiated lights and sirens.

When officers got up to the vehicle, the driver and back seat passenger attempted to get out of the car, but were instructed to stay inside. Police say they saw the driver shove something underneath the seat in the back and was asked to step out of the vehicle. Due to an odor of marijuana, the passenger was also asked to step out of the car.

After searching the vehicle, police found a firearm located under the car seat in the back right passenger. Officers ran the drivers information and discovered he was a convicted felon, making owning a firearm illegal. Both driver and passenger claimed the gun was not theirs.

The driver was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, rear license not illuminated, and failure to or improper signal. He was transported to Christian County Jail.
