FORT CAMPBELL, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Under recent new leadership, the Department of War Education Activity is eliminating specific administrative positions that will impact 161 schools across the world including Fort Campbell.

“DoWEA is reducing unnecessary bureaucracy and eliminating certain administrative positions, including community superintendents and related support staff,” Deputy Press Secretary Jacob Bliss told Christian County Now. Details about specific positions or how many jobs may be eliminated locally have not been released.

On Friday morning, Hugh McKinnon was still listed as the community superintendent for Fort Campbell Schools. There are eight individuals serving as community superintendents in just the United States and Puerto Rico, according to the Department of War Education Activity website.

DoWEA (formerly DoDEA) enrolls around 67,000 military-connected students, operating at 161 schools located in seven states and 11 countries between the Americas, Europe and the Pacific. This includes four elementary, one middle and one high school on Fort Campbell.

Reason for change, new leadership introduced in March

On behalf of the Office of the Assistant to the Secretary of War for Public Affairs, Bliss said the savings from eliminating these positions will be reinvested in classroom positions.

“Department of War Education Activity is committed to providing our military-connected children with the best possible education,” said Bliss. “We are transforming the organization in line with this commitment, focused on parental transparency, high expectations for students, superb teachers, and rigorous curriculum.”

This change comes after the Department of War appointed Paul Craft as the director of DoWEA, effective March 9. He replaced Dr. Beth Schiavino-Narvaez, who had held the position since June 2024.

“He is the right leader to swiftly reorient DoWEA towards patriotic values and classical learning, consistent with the Department’s focus on merit, standards, and excellence,” said Secretary of War Pete Hegseth in a news release.
