HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – With school going back in session on Aug. 26, school zones on the roadways will be reinforced. The Hopkinsville Police Department is reminding the community that these lower speed areas are in place to keep students safe.
“We would like to remind drivers to slow down even when they’re approaching a school zone,” said Royal Marfil with the HPD. “Some students do walk to school and sometimes sidewalks are not accessible. Slowing down in school zones allows students/pedestrians a better chance to make it to school safely.”
On Aug. 13, the Hopkinsville Police Department issued 15 citations for speeding in a school zone while the Christian County Head Start program was in session. With a 25 mph school zone speed limit set in the area of Glass Avenue, some vehicles were cited for going up to 25 mph over the limit.
While HPD told Christian County now there does not seem to be a specific school zone that sees a higher number of speeders, they previously received several complaints from the area of the Heritage Christian Academy on the Eagle Way Bypass. Drivers that are caught speeding in an active school zone will receive a double fine on their speeding ticket, with the amount depending on their speed.
In regard to bus stops, HPD encourages parents to keep their children from playing in the roadway while waiting for the bus. Students should also wait to start crossing the street to load into the bus until it has come to a complete stop.
Christian County Public Schools also released important information about drop off and pick up at the new Indian Hills Elementary location. Koffman Drive by the school will be closed to through traffic every weekday between the hours of 8:10 a.m.-2:20 p.m. Indian Hills visitors should access the school through South Sunset and HHS visitors should plan to access the school through Lafayette Road.
