HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A man was arrested Sunday night after a collision with a horse and buggy on South Virginia Street near Morningside Drive in Hopkinsville.
Hopkinsville Police observed a vehicle driving erratically around 11:50 p.m. on March 3. The officer in the vehicle suspected the driver was under the influence, but the vehicle struck the horse and buggy before the officer was able to initiate a traffic stop.
Two of the occupants of the buggy were alert and conscious after the crash, but the third person briefly lost consciousness according to HPD. Hopkinsville EMS said they refused further medical treatment and had only minor injuries. After the collision, the horse and part of the buggy continued down the road to Ninth Street where it struck a police cruiser. The horse was uninjured.
Officers noticed the smell of alcohol on the driver and described him in the police report as being unbalanced with slurred speech and glossy eyes. The driver told officers he drank a pint of vodka. He was given the walk and turn test and was unable to perform most actions.
It was also discovered that the driver did not have a license or insurance on the vehicle. The man is facing four charges including operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
