HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Due to predicted weather blowing through overnight, the Hopkinsville Salvation Army is opening their Extreme Weather Shelter. The forecasted windchill will drop below 20 degrees Wednesday night, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Cold weather will continue into Thursday, with temperatures only rising to 29 degrees according to the National Weather Service.

To accommodate extra people, additional beds will be set up at the shelter and will be available for anyone needing to escape the cold. Most of their usual requirements for staying at the shelter do not apply, and no identification is required. The shelter will open at 7 p.m. at 701 East Clay Street. People are encouraged to enter at the back of the thrift store.

The Salvation Army is in need of sponsorships for the Extreme Weather Shelter and are looking for the support of the community to help them get through the season. “This service is does not currently receive funding for operations, but we trust funds will come through to meet this crucial need,” said a statement from the shelter.

Those interested in donating can call 270-885-9633, or mail donations to PO Box 427, Hopkinsville, Kentucky 42241. $200 donations can cover the cost of staff and supplies required to open in these emergency situations.
