HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – First Christian Church in Hopkinsville is hosting a blood drive on May 5 in honor of 23-year-old Chase Pemberton, who is currently at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville receiving treatment.

Leslie and LeeAnn Sorrell coordinated the blood drive through the church due the family’s close connection to the congregation. Leslie, Chase’s aunt, told Christian County Now that the blood drive allows the community to take action in a way that has the potential to directly assist in his recovery, while also helping others in need.

Chase is currently in the Myelosuppression/Stem Cell transplant unit receiving chemotherapy. He has the rare O-negative blood type, which only about 7% of the population has, and having continuous access to platelets is a necessary part of his treatment.

“It makes a difference to show up and give,” said Sorrell, emphasizing the importance of giving blood every day, especially through a critical blood shortage reported by her nephew’s physicians. She added that each blood donation could help three individuals.

The blood drive is being held at First Christian Church in Hopkinsville by Blood Assurance on May 5 from 12- 6 p.m. and is open to community members with any blood type. Anyone who donates during the event who has O-negative blood will receive a gift certificate. People who donate will also be entered for a chance to win a Weber Performer Charcoal Grill to boost involvement.
