HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Lyle Dunbar, a longtime coach of Christian County High School basketball and hall of fame inductee, died on Oct. 16.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and former players of legendary Christian County High School Coach Lyle Dunbar,” said a statement from CCPS. He led the Colonels from 1975-1994 earning 386 wins, 12 district championships, six regional titles, and guided his teams to the Sweet 16 state championship game twice, in 1976 and 1979.

Dunbar was inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022. During his total career, he was at four schools before ending his career at CCHS. According to the KYBBHOF website, over a 33-year career his combined teams won 628 games.

“Coach Dunbar’s impact on Christian County athletics and the countless student-athletes he mentored will never be forgotten. His leadership, passion, and dedication helped shape the proud tradition of Colonel basketball,” said CCPS. During the Oct. 16 Board of Education meeting, a moment of silence was held in his honor.
