FORT CAMPBELL, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Rescue teams with Fort Campbell Fire and Emergency Services went under in 60-degree water this week as part of annual swift water rescue training.
During the three days of training on post, Fort Campbell was joined by members of the Montgomery County Fire Service rescue team, said Bart Brindle, Fort Campbell Assistant Fire Chief and trainer for the exercise. On Thursday, they conducted “contact rescues,” physically rescuing the victim. Training techniques include individual rescue, boat rescue, and using “throw bags” for downstream rescue.

Fort Campbell Fire Chief Robert Coonce said their team responds to about three such rescues every year, sometimes in mutual aid to Oak Grove, or Stewart and Montgomery County, Tennessee. The training helps makes sure everyone stays safe.
“It’s all with the intent of making sure the rescuers are safe, and how to most effectively rescue those people that are trapped in water, whether it’s still water or actively moving water,” Coonce said. “Our crews train this way so that when those seasons come, they’re prepared to respond.”
