HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The sun was shining, and a cool breeze was blowing as the Oak Grove Police and Volunteer Fire Department were joined by city leaders and members of the community at the War Memorial Walking Trail Park for a cookout.

Ron Fahy, with the local non-profit Fort Care, set up early on Saturday morning preparing to grill up some crowd favorite to show appreciation to members of the community and say thank you to first responders. Throughout the afternoon, over a hundred people came through to hang out and eat.

“It’s always a privilege to serve the community,” Fahy told Christian County Now. Through Fort Care, he has regularly prepared meals, distributed food and groceries to soldiers and people in the area alongside committed volunteers for the last 20 years. Last month in March, Fort Care distributed thousands of pounds of deer meat and free groceries on Fort Campbell.

During Saturday’s event, Oak Grove firefighters allowed kids to climb aboard the truck, while police officers engaged with incoming residents while they had a hearty lunch of burgers and hot dogs. Oak Grove City Council members and Mayor Jackie Oliver were also in attendance, joined by soldiers and representatives from Fort Campbell.

Police Chief Dennis Cunningham explained that fun community events like this are a crucial way to connect with residents, also praising Fahy’s continued work in Christian County.

“It’s important for the community to know the faces of the people that actually do law enforcement and fire duties here in the city limits,” Cunningham told Christian County Now. “He’s (Fahy’s) a super guy, he would do anything in the world for you, and I just totally enjoy working with him. He’s good people.”
