HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Former Hopkinsville Mayor and Kentucky government officeholder, George L. Atkins passed away April 14 at the age of 82.
George was born in Hopkinsville and went to the University of Kentucky where he graduated in 1963. He held various positions in Kentucky government including Mayor of Hopkinsville, State Auditor of Public Accounts, Finance Secretary and Secretary of the Governor’s Cabinet.
Throughout his life, George remained an active member of the board and participated in many civic, charitable, professional, and educational organizations as well as serving on several boards.
A memorial service will be held on April 19 at 11 a.m. at Pearson’s, 149, Breckenridge Lane, Louisville KY. Visitation from 12-2:30 p.m. on Friday, following the service at the funeral home in Louisville.
A visitation will also be held in Hopkinsville on Saturday, April 20 from 2-4 p.m. at the Hughart, Beard and Giles Funeral Home, 2504 South Virginia Street.
