HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Construction for a home being built with a concrete foundation and walls is underway in Hopkinsville. Habitat for Humanity of the Pennyrile Region, and students from Hopkinsville Community College gathered on Nov. 19 to share their mission to build more unique and affordable homes throughout the community.

The coalition known as Build with Strength uses insulated concrete forms and a sustainable building system to reduce upfront expenses and on-site construction time while maximizing the home’s durability and energy performance. “This method makes the home super safe and resilient,” said Brian Keith, Director of Operations, Habitat for Humanity of Pennyrile Region.

Keith shared that the goal is to provide communities in Hopkins, Christian and Webster counties with more safe and reliable housing in the future. He says these communities are often hit with severe weather and experience natural disasters, so they would like to continue to grow on the Build with Strength method.

Construction technology, electrical and HVAC program students from HCC are volunteering on the project throughout their semester. “It allows our students to build a real house with real people and get that opportunity in the real world,” said Chris Boyett, HCC vice president for academic affairs.

Habitat of the Pennyrile shared that the constructed house is given to someone who is in need in the local community. “There is an application period based on three factors including income, they cannot be homeowners, and a willingness to participate in our workshops,” added Keith.

The home is set to be completed with the students by the end of their spring semester in May 2025.
