HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Hopkinsville Family YMCA held a prayer and tribute workout on Sept. 7 at the Stadium of Champions to bring the community together in remembrance of 9/11. The event was free and open to the public, with dozens of members of the community showing up in supports.

According to the YMCA, a prayer was led by Fire Department Chaplain Nate Miller and participants climbed up and down the stadium steps totally over 2,000 steps. This equates the number of steps first responders in New York took to reach all 110 stories of the World Trade Center.

“A small tribute such as this is just a great way to show respect and remember the sacrifices of those lost,” said Payton Rogers with Hopkinsville Fire Department/EMS. “It’s a great opportunity for us to join other community members and pay tribute to the lives lost that day in a positive way.”

Some participants wore emergency gear while ascending and descending the steps to feel the full impact, with some children joining in the workout as well. This is the second year HFD participated in the stair climb, with Rogers adding that 9/11 is always a solemn day for fire departments, and the sacrifice of those on the scene is unimaginable.
