HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – For the first time in over five years, the Hopkinsville Police Department is inviting the community to get a taste of police training with the Citizens Police Academy. Participants will get a fun, crash course into the ins and outs of law enforcement and learn how the department functions.
“They’ll learn everything from evidence processing, SWAT, our K9 teams, investigations and they’ll be able to get behind the wheel of a patrol vehicle and conduct their own traffic stops, in a safe and controlled environment of course,” said Royal Marfil with HPD. Students will also get the opportunity to wear goggles to simulate inebriation, while driving in a parking lot to better understand the effects of driving under the influence.
The department is hoping the program will help instill better communication between citizens and officers through education. The Citizens Academy will be a six-week session beginning June 10, with meetings every Monday evening. There are limited spots available, so anyone interested can pick up an application at 101 North Main Street in Hopkinsville. The deadline is May 31.
