HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Letter Carriers of Hopkinsville is collecting donations for local food pantries this weekend during this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
Since 1993, Letter Carriers of Hopkinsville has participated in the nationwide movement where people are encouraged to leave non-perishable food items in a bag near their mailbox on Saturday, May 10. During their regular routes, postal workers will collect the donations along with delivering the day’s mail.
Crystal Spencer, President of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch #836, said each year they collect between 2,000 and 5,000 pounds of food during Stamp Out Hunger. The goal of the food drive is to help the fight in ending hunger in the community. This year, donations will go directly to the local Salvation Army and the Micah Mission Center in Hopkinsville.
Micah Mission Center holds a monthly food distribution to the community on the third Friday of each month, along with serving hot meals every Monday through Thursday at 11:30 a.m. A pre-packaged cold breakfast is also served at 9 a.m. at their location on 209 South Main Street.
The Salvation Army at 313 East Seventh Street offers resources, meals, and shelter for those who are unhoused or need further assistance. They have a soup kitchen open for 45 minutes on Monday through Saturday at 11:30 a.m., and Sundays at 12:45 p.m. Their food pantry is also open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 12:15 p.m.- 1p.m.
