HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The Lot Next Door program in Hopkinsville was created in response to the large number of vacant lots in the city, and has received over 100 applicants so far.
A press release from The City of Hopkinsville says, “The Lot Next Door Program is designed to put vacant and abandoned lots back into productive usage by transferring them to residents who will take care of the properties to the standards of the code.”
There are around 1,000 abandoned or poorly maintained lots right now in Hopkinsville. The goal of the program is to increase city tax revenue, improve neighborhoods, lower public works expenses, and beautify the community.
Due to the success of The Lot Next Door, and the number of applications they have received, they will now only accept applicants on a bi-annual basis. “Beginning next calendar year, the application windows will be open for the months of January and July respectively. The new strategy will allow staff to directly work with residents to effectively walk them through the application process,” the release said.
Anyone interested in applying would have to be next door to a vacant lot, current on taxes for all properties in Hopkinsville, have no city liens, and have no city code violations on any property owned in Hopkinsville.
