HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Mayor James R. Knight presented the Hopkinsville Police Department’s paw-trol officer with a dog friendly key to the city before he and his owner move out of the city.
“This evening we want to recognize the distinguished service of Bolo…because every good boy deserves an official recognition and a well-earned reward,” said Knight alongside Police Chief Jason Newby. With his favorite toy by his side, Bolo was presented with a certificate of distinguished service and a key to the city that was created from dog treats.

The honor came as Bolo and his owner, Royale Marfil with the Hopkinsville Police Department, prepare to move out of state.
In November of 2023, Bolo was sworn in by the mayor as HPD’s first paw-trol officer. Bolo had found his home at HPD after a station visit from the Christian County Animal Shelter where he was adopted by Officer Marfil.
Bolo was not a traditional K9 officer and instead acted as a sort of mascot for the department. Over the years he was frequently seen hanging around the station and attending community events, some of which he had a direct invitation to.
Marfil recently stepped down from her role as public information officer, which has since been filled by Officer Justin Rios. To keep the tradition alive, Rios adopted a puppy named Radar, who will also act as a community liaison.
