HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Separate from a series of controlled burns that took place at Land Between the Lakes in the past few weeks, a man-made fire overtook hundreds of acres of wooded area at the park this weekend.

As of March 29 at 6 p.m., the fire has been successfully contained. The flames started small on Sunday morning, spreading to 150 around noon and continuing to cover 450 acres before it was controlled. The fire occurred on the Kentucky side of the park Rhodes Bay off of Forest Service Road 337.

“Fire may continue to creep in the interior of the containment and smoke may still be seen. Crews will continue to monitor the area and perimeter,” said a statement. The impacted portion of the trail will remain closed, with FS Road 337 reopened Monday.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but it is believed to be human caused, according to a fire alert from LBL. Due to lingering hot spots, people should still steer clear of the area.
