HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – This summer’s Hummingbird Festival in Hopkinsville is set for Aug. 23, giving the community the opportunity to interact with nature in a unique way at Jeffers Bend Environmental Center.
Last year’s festival brought it over 200 people, and this year the fun continues with families able to watch migrating hummingbirds, listen to local folklore, participate in a poster contest, and learn how to make bird feeders. Most importantly, the Jeffers Bend Botanical Garden will attract migrating hummingbirds, allowing them to catch, band, and release them during the event.
“The third-year event is being held in response to lovers of the little bird, and supporting efforts being made to attract more birds to Jeffers Bend over a period of several weeks, culminating with the festival,” said a news release from Jeffers Bend.
These tiny birds will be safely handled by experienced Master Gardeners, who will display the process of banding at the festival, which help track migration patterns. While volunteers wait for birds to be caught, visitors have a chance to learn more about pollinators, insects, and birds.
The Hummingbird Festival will be hosted by the Jeffers Bend Steering Committee in cooperation with Pennyrile RC&D Area Council, Inc., the local Little River Audubon Society, Christian County Master Gardeners, Hopkinsville Water Environment Authority, United Southern Bank, and the City of Hopkinsville.
The event will take place on Aug. 23 from 9 a.m. to noon on Metcalfe Lane in Hopkinsville. They will also have refreshments, a hummingbird cake auction, and a drawing for bird feeders and other prizes.
