HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – Necessary funding was raised for Jeffers Bend Environmental Center during their annual event, Benefit for the Bend. With the goal of raising $30,000, a pork chop dinner was held alongside a silent auction and award ceremony.
The non-profit organization Pennyrile Resource Conservation and Development Area Council, Inc. partnered with Jeffers Bend Steering Committee, Christian County Master Gardeners, and others in hosting the fundraiser on June 21. 150 items were available for auction during the event, and a dinner consisting of their signature grilled pork chops was served.
This growing event was enacted in 2008 in an effort to provide more resources for ongoing operations and maintenance at Jeffers Bend. The funds raised help them with large community events like Torchlight Tales, Christmas at the Bend, the Hummingbird Festival, Naturefest, and Take Kids Fishing Day. They also have to maintain the botanical garden area and other nature areas on the grounds.
Community awards
For the first time, four awards were presented during the benefit to outstanding supporters of Jeffers Bend. The Christian County Jail was the recipient of the Community Service Award in thanks for providing labor and equipment support. Through a work program at the jail, select inmates have been helping maintain the gardens, while also assisting with mowing and other grounds projects. They were also integral in cleanup efforts after the flood.
Leadership Christian County Class of 2024/25 was given the Special Project Award for installing new steps at the welcome center, expanding the gravel parking lot, and carrying out various projects to support the mission of Jeffers Bend.
Gary Fromm of Hopkinsville was presented with the D.T. Porter/RC&D Person of the Year Award due to his years of dedication to Jeffers Bend by donating numerous hours of labor, aid, equipment, and materials for projects. The Chairman’s Award went to Paula Gieseke, an Art Teacher at Christian County High School. She has produced several murals on the walls of Jeffers Bend that can be seen during events.
Outside of the benefit event, people can donate to support Jeffers Bend Environmental Center all year long on their website.
