HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – A popular fishing spot right outside of Hopkinsville will now have the gates opened and closed by Hopkinsville Police as the spring and summer season begins. Since Lake Morris spans over 100 acres, officers want to ensure the public is safe while on the water.

Officers will open the gates daily at 7 a.m., and close them at 7 p.m. all year long, according to Officer Royale Marfil.

To reinforce basic safety, HPD is reminding the community about the importance of flotation vests. If children are fishing, especially if they are on a boat, a vest can save a life. Officer Marfil also advises that since the lake is a little removed from the city, it would be smart to know basic first aid and CPR in case of an emergency.

Fishing is free and open to the public all year. No swimming, camping, or hunting is permitted at Lake Morris, and gas-powered boats are not allowed on the water. More rules are posted at the entrance.
